Since the Mace refit at Keelby our feet have hardly touched the ground. The whole thing has been a marvellous success, and we have all had great fun. Now things are settling down we are going to resume our regular blogging - all that happens, as it happens, in our shops at Great Limber and Keelby!

Mace - up and running

Back to our website: Village Stores

It's been a really hectic couple of weeks, but the refit at Keelby is now largely complete. A team from Mace has helped us stock the shop, and give all the products their proper layout. We have new graphics in the windows, and some splendid special offers!

Here we go!

Back to our website: Village Stores

Tomorrow (Monday 15th) is the start of the refit for Mace at the Keelby shop. On Tuesday we are having extra stock delivered from our wholesaler, and on Wednesday folks from Mace will come to help us put it all out on the shelves. On Thursday we get our Mace signs and vinyl’s for the windows. It's all very exciting - and a little bit daunting. Watch this space for updates!

Back to our website: Village Stores

During the week we had some excellent news! A customer came into our shop at Keelby and bought one of our lottery scratch cards. When he scratched it, he found he had won £5,000. He came back to the shop to let us know. Congratulations to him - and we all wish "Best of Luck" to all of our friends who do the lottery with us.

Work Continues Towards Mace

Back to our website: Village Stores

We are now on a tight schedule to get everything ready for August 15th. at Keelby. The electricians have confirmed they can attend on that day, the finance is in place and we now have a second broadband connection. Last Wednesday 2 folks from Mace came to sort out newspaper supplies, and next Tuesday they're back to plan our initial stock order, and to talk about stock layouts in the re-arranged shop. And we have all given our measurements for Mace shirts etc. Full speed ahead!

A Gala Weekend

Back to our website: Village Stores

Keelby's summer gala took place on Saturday July 16th, and was used to raise funds for Help For Heroes. We donated some money and raffle prizes, and sold raffle tickets in the shop. The day turned out wet - one of the few wet Saturdays we've had since March! Despite that the crowds came out, and much fun was had.

Limber's gala was next day. At the moment (Saturday pm) the weather seems to be brightening - so fingers crossed. Jayne has a stall at the Limber gala - she is selling hand-made necklace and ear rings.

Euro millions Lottery Jackpot at Maximum

Back to our website: Village Stores

The Euro millions lottery has rolled over several times, and the jackpot now stands at a maximum 185 million euros (roughly £166 million). The jackpot will remain at this figure until it is won. The accumulated fund which would otherwise take the jackpot above £166m is being split amongst the "second prize" winners - on Friday 8th July 2011 two tickets in the UK won £3.3m each, because of this rule. Best of luck to everyone!

Lincolnshire Stuffed Chine

Back to our website: Village Stores

A lady said she liked our sliced Lincolnshire stuffed chine, but asked if we could supply it as a joint rather than pre-sliced. Our butchers were delighted to help, but when the delivery came a mix-up meant they sent a wonderful fore-rib of beef instead. They offered to swap next day, so we put the beef on the shelf. A second lady saw it, liked it a lot, and bought it there and then. When the chine came next day a third customer was admiring it, but we said it was already ordered. The third lady said she might make her own chine joint - but could we supply her with a washing-up bowl full of fresh parsley? Of course, we can - thanks to our vegetable suppliers!

Peacocks in Keelby

Back to our website: Village Stores

Over the past week two peacocks have been visiting Keelby. Nobody seems to know where they have come from, but most folks think they may have escaped from a house in Healing, just down the road. Last night they perched on the roof of the Magic Wok takeaway, just round the corner from our Keelby shop. They drew quite a crowd, and suddenly found themselves being dive-bombed by a group of angry crows!

What Mary Portas said at the Pro Retail Show:

Back to our website: Village Stores

Folks want
1) Ethical & local produce, where possible
2) Good value (because of the recession)
3) A wide choice and clean shops (legacy of the big supermarkets).
4) Digital access (email, Twitter etc.) - but people still miss human contact.

She says "become experts about the origin & use of the products you sell, and smile a lot." She feels BOGOF is becoming a turn-off, as customers think it leads to over consumption and waste. Small shops should emphasise their individuality, keep up with trends - and have good hygiene.

We'll try our best!

Strawberries and Asparagus!

Back to our website: Village Stores

very sunny and warm for the time of the year, and as a result seasonal crops are very early. We have had some wonderful English asparagus in the shops for the past fortnight, and last Friday we got the first of our local strawberries.

You can't beat local, farm-fresh strawberries. Their smell is sumptuous, and they taste divine. Do come and get some while they're here!

On 14th and 15th May all the churches in our part of Lincolnshire had an open day, when people were encouraged to visit them and soak up the history. Jayne and her team of bakers supplied slices of home-made cake to have with tea and coffee at the Limber Church. Many thanks to everyone!

We are just back from the Pro-Retail 2011 trade show in Telford. It was a massive event, over two days, attended by over 6,000 visitors. On Tuesday night we were guests at a VIP cocktail reception, then attended a gala dinner. Next day we hit the trade stands, and were lucky enough to attend a presentation by Mary Portas, famous for her Queen of Shops TV programmes.

The Royal Wedding

Back to our website: Village Stores

We all had a great time on Friday 29th April - the day Prince William married Catherine Middleton. Both shops were filled with bunting and flags, and we arranged a rota so we could also get to the party being held in Limber Village Hall. The party was well attended, and Jayne was interviewed by BBC TV

Happy Easter to all our Friends!

The weather this week has been wonderful - warm, bright sunshine and no hint of rain. Lots of people have been buying Roes Dairy ice-cream from our new fridge at Keelby. On Friday we got our first local asparagus of the season - very early this year. Let’s hope the good weather continues for the Royal Wedding - on Friday 29th of April. There are parties at the Village Hall at Great Limber, and also at St Bartholomews Church Rooms in Keelby - do come along with a plate of food, and watch the wedding.

Mr Hughie Durkin - passed away

We were sad to learn yesterday that Hughie Durkin passed away, after a short illness. Hughie was quite a character, and enjoyed a drink. By trade he was a roofer, but in the 80s he and his wife Rhona built and ran the shop we now own at Keelby.

Organ Concert - Keelby Village Hall

Just back from a wonderful evening - songs from the shows played on a Wurlitzer style organ at Keelby Village Hall. Everyone is so lucky that there are dedicated people who can put on such events. Bravo! Jayne won a bottle of wine in the raffle, too!

New Ice-cream Fridge for Keelby

In the depths of the snow last December, our ice-cream fridge went bonkers and melted all our ice-cream. Since then we've been trying to get it fixed, but it contains a special refrigerant, and the only engineers who would do it come from Burnley. So we're getting a new one - it should arrive on Monday 11th April.

Trouble with cards

Back to our website: Village Stores

Last week our Keelby Switch machine refused to recognise our phone line, so a new one came out to us on Saturday morning. The new one wouldn't work either, so David tried plugging into different phone sockets, and eventually asked BT to boost the voltage on the phone line. Nothing worked, so he tried the new machine at Limber, proving the new machine was faulty. We are now awaiting a replacement for the replacement! We hope to do phone top-ups and payment by cards very soon - thanks for your patience!

Twitter and Facebook at Village Stores

David has spent all week trying to get Village Stores listed on Twitter and Facebook. He thinks he might have done it, but it's very early days yet, so please forgive a rather unpolished first attempt.
Do find us on Facebook, and "Like" us - if we deserve it, of course!
And I'm sure you'll like our Tweets, and may even wish to "@mention" us in your own.

As always, feedback is gratefully (and humbly) appreciated.

Joke for those who speak Latin

This is a joke we found on Twitter (a chap called @Randomjokes).
Julius Caesar goes into a bar and asks the bar tender for a Martinus.
"Don't you mean Martini?"

"No, I can't drink more than one!"

Week of Drama in the Villages

This week has been a week of drama in Limber and Keelby.

A middle aged gentleman was found dead in a ditch just outside Keelby on Friday 18th. We understand foul play isn't suspected, and that he may have laid undiscovered since the heavy snows last December.

On Sunday morning there was a series of small explosions in Limber. Someone had apparently set fire to a car in the Village Hall car park in the early hours. We believe the police have a suspect.

Who says rural life is without incident?

In the first episode of this brand new series, mischievous food and wine expert Olly Smith invited 10 unsuspecting guests to supper at the 19th Century Mount Pleasant Windmill near Kirton in Lindsey, Lincolnshire, where they enjoyed lots of local produce - including Roe's milk!

Keelby Pantomime Treasure Island

We went to see Treasure Island on Friday 4th February. It was an outstanding production - Long John Silver was great, Purity Hawkins the Dame had us all rolling in our seats, and Blind Pugh was a comic creation without rival. Very well done to everyone - how on earth you manage it, we just can't tell! First class!

Goodbye Dream Number

On February 9th we say goodbye to the Dream Number lottery game, which we understand will be drawn for the last time on Wednesday.
But never fear, lottery fans! A fantastic new twist to the Lotto Game will be unveiled shortly afterwards, which will give everyone chances to play on more days of the week.

Ask in the shop for details.

Scottish Joke

It's Burns Night on 25th January, so here's a Scottish joke:

What's a sgian dubh?
About 70 miles per hour, but only on the motorway.

A sgian dubh (said "skean dhu") is a special dagger, part of Highland dress.

Belle-Belle's Bitten Bottom

Jayne and David went to Sledmere near Pickering for Valentine's Day weekend, and left Belle-Belle (a small terrier cross) in Limber with a friend.

When they came back they found Belle-Belle had had a fight with another dog in the village. Belle-Belle had to go to the vets for bites on her rump, and is currently wearing a lamp-shade collar.

Hounds and high winds

The Yarborough Hunt met in the car park at the Kings Head at Keelby on Saturday 15th January, then the hounds passed through the village followed by the huntsmen on their horses. The master of the hunt wears a scarlet jacket, known as hunting pink for historical reasons.

As a shopkeeper you have to watch out for the hounds at times like this - they have no sense of direction, and can easily wander into your shop. Guard the sausages, men!

This weekend the weather turned very mild for January, and the last of the snow melted. There were gale-force winds, just to add a bit of interest.

Yo ho ho me hearties

Well, two cheers for 2011 so far - the snow from 1st December has now almost completely gone (causing some burst pipes) and everyone has got coughs and colds! But we're going to zonk away all those mid-Winter blues with some serious merry-making!

Tickets for the Keelby Cricket Club annual panto "Treasure Island" are selling like hot cakes - ask about them in either of our shops.

And we're getting all prepared for Burns Night, January 25th., too.

People ask why Burns night is special for us. Well, Jayne used to be a nurse on the Burns and Plastics unit of Leicester Royal Infirmary, so when David and Jayne were first going-out, we made a big thing about Jayne being a Burns Nurse. We've eaten haggis on Burns Night ever since - 21 years and counting, folks!
